When you meet N, the first thing you notice is her smile. It’s easy and contagious and is prized by her many customers.
What most people don’t know is the story behind the smile she chooses to wear every day.
A childhood without a footing
N grew up without her father in her life, and her mother’s legal troubles meant that N was largely on her own . Her maternal grandfather stepped in and raised her as best he could with the little that he had – but it wasn’t enough to take her to school.
When N was eight, her grandfather could no longer provide for her, and she was placed in a care home on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City. It was there that she finally learned to read and write, caught up with her peers, and began to feel settled. But just as she finished Grade 9 and was eager to pursue high school, the care home was forced to close, putting her life in uncertainty once again.
A door opens
It was the care home director who connected N with our partner, Saigon Children’s Charity. When N came in, she was unsure about her future — but through vocational counseling, she discovered something she both loved and had a natural gift for: doing people’s hair.
“Before, I was quite insecure,” she reflects. “I didn’t know what I was suited for. I was shy and anxious around people I didn’t know.”
With a scholarship of roughly $300 covering her full tuition, tools, and travel expenses throughout the program, N enrolled in a professional hairdressing course. There, she learned more than how to style hair. She learned how to speak gently with clients, how to make them feel cared for, and how to carry herself in a professional setting. The soft skills training bundled into the scholarship turned out to matter as much as the cutting and styling.
She completed the program with distinction. She now works at a spa in Ho Chi Minh City, earning around 6 million VND a month – enough to provide for herself and sustain a stable, independent life.
“I feel more grown up now,” she says. “I have a clear goal. I want to stay in this work long-term and keep getting better.”
N’s warmth and natural ease is what attracts the customers, who come not just to get their hair done, but for the quiet comfort of having someone genuinely listen. The salon, the friendships she has built, and the clients who return week after week have become the family that she spent her whole childhood searching for, and found at last on her own terms.
